How We Are Uniquely Positioned To Help Athletes

Don't be mistaken: this is not your average Physical Therapy Clinic. The experience and treatment you get at NorCal Physiotherapy is unique to us. You won't get this anywhere else.

We did that on purpose. We have been to other clinics - as patients and as Doctors - and it was never a good experience. Here's how we built our clinic specifically to provide physiotherapy for athletes.

Gym Location
Walking up to our clinic, you will notice that we don't look like a typical medical clinic. We are attached to a gym. You are an athlete. We are athletes. Let's work where athletes feel most at home! And yes, we will be using implements in the gym - boxes, rowers, bikes, sleds, barbells, kettlebells, and sandbags are ALL fair game.

1-on-1 Treatment
All sessions - every single one - are with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. You won't work with aids, techs, or assistants. You will also never have a double booked appointment. All attention during each session will be on achieving your goals.

1-hour Sessions
There's a lot to get through in treatment sessions. We have ample time to get everything done in your time frame. Need extra time to understand your exercises? We have time for that. Want to chat about nutrition, workouts, or anything else under the sun? Sure thing! This time is to reach your goals and is customized to what you need most.

Athletes Treating Athletes
If your goal is to get back to running, strongman competition, Crossfit, or activity in general, then you need to work with someone who understands the importance of exercise. We won't tell you to do anything that we have not done ourselves.

Who We Treat

If you have a body, if you like to move, and if you are willing to put in work to get better, then we will work with you.

We get it, we aren't for everyone. Not everyone wants gym-based, performance Physical Therapy. Because of that, we focus all our attention on a specific group of people.

We work with people who are eager to get back to their previous active lifestyle without pain and without restrictions. If you want to work hard, stop recurring injuries, and get stronger, then you are likely going to be a great fit with us.

Many people who come to us have been to other practitioners - massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, and body work - without any success. You want something other than the standard PT and medical treatment.

What We Treat

We treat a broad range of diagnoses, so our focus is more on "who" than the "what". If we described you in the section above, we can most likely work with you.

The diagnoses we work with include (but definitely NOT limited to):

  • Headaches
  • Concussions
  • Surgery Rehab (ACL, Labral, Biceps tenodesis, Rotator Cuff, Kee/Hip/Shoulder replacement, etc...)
  • Strains & Sprains
  • General Pain (spine, shoulder, elbow, neck, knee, hip, foot, ankle, etc...)

If you got it, we can probably fix it. If not, we can direct you to someone who can.

Regardless of what diagnosis you come in with, our goal is to get you back to 100%. That means return to sport testing, specifically after surgeries. Before you're done with us, we will both be completely confident in your safe and successful return.

How We Treat

Your goal is to get back to your favorite sports and activities without restriction. We can help with that. The NorCal Physio Process has 4 steps:

1 Evaluate the condition and create a plan
Effort without a plan is often wasted. Where are you right now and where do you want to go? The answer to that question is the focus of your Physio Eval.

 2 Alleviate your pain
Manage your pain so you can move better. During this stage, we utilize a combination of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and corrective exercises

3 Fix the underlying cause
Anyone can relieve pain. But you want long term, lasting improvement, right? So we need to find and fix the underlying cause of pain. We do this with movement mastery through accessory exercises and strength training.

4 Plan for the future
Again, the goal is long term results. You will become independent with self-management tactics so you can crush this problem again if it ever comes back. At this stage, you will have learned what exercises and movements work best for your specific needs.

NorCal Physiotherapy Team

Dr Caleb Kauffmann
PT, DPT, Cert SMT/DN, Dip Osteopractic, FAAOMPT

Doctor of Physical Therapy
Owner, NorCal Physio

Dr Caleb Kauffmann founded NorCal Physio with the goal of helping athletes get back to their best active lifestyle without pain holding them back. Everything we do - from our 1-on-1 treatment our hour long appointments, to our philosophy of treatment - is done with that goal in mind.

Dr Caleb enjoys working with barbell athletes, runners, and combat athletes not only because he has seen great results with this group, but also because he participates in all these sports. Let’s be honest, we all want to hang out with people who have similar interests to us. So why not help those people get out of pain and excel in their sport?

Dr Caleb received his undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Liberty University in Virginia (BS in Kinesiology). He then attended Lynchburg College and earned a doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT). After receiving his doctorate, he went on to become certified in dry needling therapy (Cert. DN) and certified in spinal manipulation therapy (Cert. SMT). He also holds a diploma in Osteopractic Physical Therapy (Dip. Osteopractic). Additionally, Dr Caleb Kauffmann completed a fellowship in orthopedic manual physical therapy (FAAOMPT), an achievement held by only a small portion of physical therapists.

All that training and clinical experience has trained Dr Caleb to help athletes get out of pain and become resilient.

Dr Eric Jacques
PT, DPT, CSCS

Doctor of Physical Therapy

As a competitive athlete, powerlifting coach, and Physio Doctor, Dr. Eric has a very unique perspective on not only treating but also training the barbell athlete.

While pursuing his degree in Chemistry at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, Dr Eric was a collegiate powerlifter. He had a very successful career which included multiple state records across several weight classes and age divisions. His time as an athlete culminated at his senior year Equipped Collegiate National Championships in which he totaled 730kgs by way of a 280kgs squat, a 170kgs bench press, and a 280kgs deadlift.

After competing, his primary focus changed from performing the lifts to helping others compete at their maximal potential through coaching and training, having had the opportunity to return to his old team as a coach during his graduate program. His studies have led him to become a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at Northeastern University.

The experiences as a competitive athlete, coach, and physio doctor have given Dr. Eric a unique perspective and approach. His competitive background allows him to understand the drive and intensity of a training program. His strength and conditioning training background gives the knowledge of creating the ideal programs for the individual athlete. His experience as a doctor of physical therapy provides an intricate knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology.  Combining these three gives him the ability to create an experience in the clinic that can be described as rehab meets performance training.

Dr JP Gloria
PT, DPT, USATF

Doctor of Physical Therapy

JP is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, educator, running coach, and avid runner. He has worked across the continuum from young athletes going to the Junior Olympics to 60+ year old masters athletes breaking age group records.

He has a special interest in working with endurance athletes and those with spinal cord injuries. His deep understanding of strength training, biomechanics, and endurance training. He has helped athletes go from being injured to achieving personal bests and records.

His unique understanding of movement actually started with becoming a character animator/developer for a video game at 15 years old. This involved making human-like characters move in a realistic manner. This required an in-depth understanding of anatomy, the parts, and the proper timing of how those parts move in relation to each other.

Eventually, this curiosity shifted from looking at "how things move" to "How can I help people move." And this led to JP getting his Doctorate in Physical Therapy and his USA Track and Field Certification (USATF).  Since then, he has taken people from all the way from barely walking to completing marathons and Ironman’s... even those who are 60+ years old!
